The Great Outdoors

Butterflies are aflutter, strawberries are in season and flowers are super blooming — nature’s sure signs that summertime will soon be in full swing. With lazy summer days and warm summer nights on the horizon, it’s time to start planning your outdoor oasis so when temps rise, you’re set. From seating and furnishings that hold up to the elements to décor and serveware for easy entertaining, we’ve got what you need to be alfresco all season.

Essentials

Rugs

Both indoors and out, rugs are an anchor in any space and can quickly elevate an otherwise ordinary setting into one that is more visually inviting. Incorporating a rug is a great way to add color and pattern to your outdoor design scheme and provide continuity to the aesthetic within your home. An added bonus — outdoor rugs help protect the surface of your deck or patio and when placed by a doorway, keep dirt from tracking inside.

Seating

When it comes to outdoor seating, comfort comes first. Whether lounging solo with a book in hand or hosting an evening with family and friends, no one wants to sit on something rigid. No matter what the occasion, outdoor furniture is meant for relaxing so it should be effortlessly cozy.  Easy care and cleaning is a likely close second to comfort when selecting outdoor furniture, so be sure to stick to materials that are unfazed by whatever nature throws their way. Furniture made using iron, aluminum, resin wicker and wood (we suggest teak), will hold up for years. For fabrics, selecting an outdoor performance fabric for cushions and pillows will help ensure they withstand the elements with ease.

• DID YOU KNOW? •

Our signature line of outdoor upholstery is bench-made (a.k.a. from scratch) in the United States, using the highest quality materials and techniques meant to withstand the elements all year long. Our frames are constructed of marine grade wood and our cushions are made from high resiliency foam wrapped in waterproof, UV protected fabric, preventing warping, fading, cracking, rotting and mildew. We offer a variety of beautiful outdoor fabrics from Sunbrella, engineered with robust performance characteristics that provide resistance to fading and degradation from sunlight. When it comes to our outdoor upholstery, you can trust that it is weather-resistant and style-persistent.

Pillows

No seating area is complete without decorative pillows. Incorporating these key accents into your seating area makes your outdoor living space a true extension of your home, adding coziness and style. Look for performance fabrics that are water, mildew, mold and fade resistant and be sure to pair with inserts that are meant for outdoors. When choosing pillow inserts, always go for foam or polyfill and steer clear of down, which can become waterlogged when wet.

Pots & Planters

Just as rugs help define a space, pots and planters can also be used to create definition and division. Place square or round shapes alone or in small clusters at each corner to establish a sense of space. Equally, use oblong shapes to replicate a hedge for separation between your dining and seating areas (and provide privacy from your neighbors!). Plants soften the lines of hardscape features and enhance the natural vibe of any outdoor retreat, so our advice is: the more the better.

Décor

While planters establish a sense of space, smaller pots can be used as decorative accents on outdoor tabletops for added interest and beauty. Trays come in handy, especially on uneven outdoor surfaces, to corral glasses and serveware. Outdoor spaces should feel easy-breezy so stick to simple pieces that are functional and no-fuss.
