Getting Grounded

A Practical Guide To Choosing The Perfect Rug
For Your Space

Whether you’re looking for a rug to define your living room or provide functionality in your kitchen, we’ve compiled a user-friendly guide to help you navigate your way through selecting the right one. With so much to consider — from materials and size to form and function — we’re here to break it down so the toughest part will be unrolling it in your home.

Materials Guide

Wool

Why we love it: Naturally repels stains, antibacterial and antimicrobial, durable, sustainable
Things to consider: Not good for damp places as it absorbs humidity, may fade in consistent direct sunlight, some constructions are prone to shedding and may require regular vacuuming
Best for: Living rooms, dining rooms and high-traffic areas

COTTON

Why we love it: Inexpensive, versatile, low-maintenance, washable
Things to consider: Doesn’t wear well over long periods of time, can stain easily
Best for: Kitchens and bathrooms

NATURAL FIBER

Why we love it: Durable, sustainable, cost efficient, goes with anything
Things to consider: Some varieties feel rough under foot, moisture can lead to mold and mildew over time, difficult to clean
Best for: Living rooms, high-traffic and sunny areas

SYNTHETIC (POLYPROPYLENE AND PET)

Why we love it: Extra durable, fade resistant, repels stains and moisture
Things to consider: Although highly stain resistant, oily spills are difficult to clean
Best for: Entryways, family rooms and patios

• PRO TIP •

Although a rug pad isn’t always necessary, we highly recommend using one in high traffic areas to prevent slipping and to extend the life of the rug. A rug pad will also provide extra cushioning under foot, dampen noise and protect your floors from scratching or staining. Still not convinced? Rug pads help prevent mold, mildew and odors by allowing more air circulation and stopping the buildup of bacteria under your rug.

Sizing Guide

Found a rug you love but not sure what size you need for your space? Follow just a few foolproof tips to make sure you get it right (the first time).

Entryway

Entryway

Rugs for the entryway should be functional and durable as this is a high foot traffic area. It is also important to place the rug far enough from the door so there is enough clearance, and consider placing it nearest the piece of furniture to create an intentional pathway.

Living Room

Living Room

Rugs should be centered under your coffee table and placed with the legs of your seating in one of three ways — four legs on the rug, four legs off the rug or only the front two legs on the rug.

 Dining Room

DINING ROOM

Rugs should be large enough to extend beyond your table and account for the distance that dining chairs get pushed back when people sit or stand. Adding 36” to both the length and width of your table (or to the diameter if it’s round) should be ample.

Bedroom

BEDROOM

Rugs should extend at least 18”-24” beyond each side of the bed so your feet have a soft place to land when getting up in the morning. If you have nightstands on either side, use the distance from outer edge to outer edge to determine the proper width. When determining the length of the rug, remember to account for any furniture at the foot of the bed and be sure that all four legs fit either on or off the rug. In a small room, consider placing a runner on either side of the bed or on the side nearest the door as an alternative.

• PRO TIP •

If you are in between sizes and the room can accommodate the larger rug, always size up.
